Today, we’re starting a beautiful and meaningful journey together.

Our world is filled with people who, on the surface, might look or sound different from us. They may have unique skin colors, speak other languages, or follow different customs and traditions. But that’s what makes our world so rich and special—each of us has something unique to share. And if we look a little deeper, we’ll find that we have so much in common; we share many of the same values and dreams.

Today, through stories and play, we’ll explore what it means to appreciate and celebrate our differences. We’ll learn about each other’s traditions, and together, we’ll work to make our school a place free of racism and bullying. Instead, we’ll build a community based on friendship, kindness, respect, and empathy.

We’ll talk about what it means to accept others as they are, to understand new cultures, to stand against discrimination, and to build our empathy—our ability to understand and feel what others feel. We’ll discover how amazing it is to learn about the lives and beliefs of people from all around the world.

Through games, stories, and shared thoughts, we’ll realize the importance of creating a warm, welcoming community where everyone feels accepted, respected, and loved.

Let’s begin this wonderful journey together!

Our first activity together will be reading two fairytales. The first fairytale comes from ancient times, passed down from generation to generation, spreading from the East all the way to Greece. The second fairytale is very well-known in our country, and perhaps someone in your family has told it to you. So, there’s a chance that some of you may have heard these fairytales before, or maybe they’ll even feel familiar.

But, first of all, why do we read fairytales?

  • To have fun and enjoy our time together, whether with family, grandparents, or friends.
  • To learn new words and concepts.
  • To discover new ideas and explore different worlds.
  • To preserve stories for future generations to learn and enjoy.
  • To teach important lessons about what is right and wrong.
  • To understand how to be good friends, share, and help others.
  • To develop our imagination and creativity.
  • To enhance our empathy; through the characters in stories, we learn to understand and feel the emotions of those around us.
  • To build our self-confidence. If the characters in these stories can overcome difficult challenges, so can we!

Our first fairytale is the “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves”. It is an Arabian folk tale, included in the “One Thousand and One Nights”.

Our second fairytale is the “Cinderella”. It is one of the most famous fairytales in Greece.

Time for discussion! I have some questions on my mind:

  • What are some of the main challenges that Cinderella and Ali Baba face in their stories? How do they each find a way to overcome these challenges?
  • How do kindness and generosity help Cinderella and Ali Baba? Can you give examples from both stories where these qualities make a difference?
  • What happens to the characters who are unkind or selfish in both stories? How does justice play a role in what happens to them?
  • What do we learn about friendship and loyalty from Cinderella and Ali Baba? How do their relationships with others help them on their journeys?

As we explored these amazing stories together today, we learned that even though Cinderella and Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves come from different parts of the world, they share many important values such as kindness, bravery and cleverness. These stories show us that no matter where we come from, we all have stories that teach us how to be good people, make friends and overcome challenges.

Remember, just like these characters, we all have the power to make good choices, help each other and grow through each adventure. Let’s take these lessons and use them to make our school a place of kindness and friendship!
